Branding Research & Strategy

Branding Research & Strategy

The launch of a branding and strategy project coincided with our Sr. Research Analyst's maternity leave and the departure of our former Director of Strategy, leaving me to take the reins for the bulk of both phases of the project.

Case Study Development

Case Study Development

Beyond simply retouching photo assets and (re)developing case study write-ups, I devised a scoring system to better prioritize which projects and programs deserve focused attention for case study development—a methodology which can also be extended to opportunity evaluation.

Brand Repositioning & Asset Development

Brand Repositioning & Asset Development

As it entered a new season with reorganized leadership, Switch was in need of a new positioning that better unified the company under a universally ownable vision. As a primary contributor in the new positioning, I continued to help guide the development of new assets supporting an updated brand identity.

Switch HQ Imagery

Switch HQ Imagery

In advance of a refresh for the Switch brand positioning and identity systems, I opted to grab a camera with a coworker and spend the afternoon capturing some new image textures of the corporate office for use on the website, print collateral and in presentation decks.

Mexican American Strategic Brief

Mexican American Strategic Brief

I project-managed and contributed to the conceptual development of this strategic brief which looked to serve up thought leadership on an increasingly prominent-yet-enigmatic ethnic subset of the Hispanic-American population. You can download the entire document at mx.switch.us.

Kingdom House

Kingdom House

As a 113-year-old inner city non-profit serving the economically disadvantaged, Kingdom House needed a refreshed, modern brand identity to better align with the local community—specifically the youth they were inviting into 'Kingdom Academy', a new extracurricular endeavor for students in 9th-12th grade.

Modern Dollar Planning

Modern Dollar Planning

Launching a startup financial planning firm in the shadow of local mainstays may seem ambitious, but the recognition of a new generation in need of financial guidance presented the opportunity to create a brand that would resonate with a younger audience looking for relatable monetary smarts.

Image Concept Blog Series

Image Concept Blog Series

Working within a motif of overtly tongue-in-cheek patriotism, I wrote a 3-part blog series outlining some frequently misunderstood image concepts, including image resolution, RGB vs. CMYK and raster images vs. vector images.

Harmony UMC

Harmony UMC

Tasked with rebranding a church looking to leave its conflicted past behind and pursue a brighter, more harmonious future, I infused the scientific elements of the namesake into the mark itself.

The World's Largest Cereal Box

The World's Largest Cereal Box

Switch was invited by Post foods to construct a 20' tall box of Honey Bunches of Oats—large enough to become the World's Largest Cereal Box. I was lucky enough to be charged with scaling up the actual packaging artwork for a cereal box, changing the weight and serving size, and setting up the graphics for print output.

"Game On" Series Promo

"Game On" Series Promo

The Gathering needed a promo video to show at their Easter service to promote the next sermon series, "Game On", the artwork for which featured chess pieces. Taking existing copy and utilizing established type style, I sourced stock footage and animated the text content in a kinetic typography style, building anticipation for the upcoming series.

UMC LEAD

UMC LEAD

When the Relevance LEAD conference and Rethink Bishop blog merged into UMC LEAD, they needed a unified identity that resonated with the diverse and progressive contingent of Methodists ready to lead the denomination into its next chapter.

Comitor Coaching

Comitor Coaching

In need of a new look as well as a new moniker, I helped select the name Comitor Coaching (previously Elevate Coach) from the Latin verb meanining "to accompany" and developed a brand identity around the metaphorical mountain climb that is life's journey.

Blocks in Frame

Blocks in Frame

A decorative install piece at King Louie's bar and restaurant, comprised of variated scorched blocks suspended in a scorched wood frame. Designed and constructed by Steve Kozel & Stephen Tomko. Time-lapse captured by Steve Kozel & Stephen Tomko. Video shot and edited by Steve Kozel.

Budweiser Brewmaster Tour

Budweiser Brewmaster Tour

When Budweiser enlisted Switch to create a two separate "mobile breweries", it meant printing and installing lots and lots of graphics. From the trailer wrap graphics emulating the actual brewery exterior to the frosted door graphics and informational signage, there were an unwieldy number of print pieces that we produced and installed to great effect... twice over.

Sermon Series Design & Copy

Sermon Series Design & Copy

In my time working at The Gathering, I served as the de facto graphic designer, developing imagery for 11 sermon series over a year and a half (as well as countless other print pieces). Each series required artwork to be reformatted across various assets, necessitating a layout that could succeed in a variety of disparate orientations and ratios. Beyond design elements, I was frequently tasked with evolving a working title into the final sermon title, complete with tagline copy. I was often also charged with translating the lead pastor’s conceptual notes on the upcoming sermon series into “preview” copy for use in promotional materials and messaging.

Mozambique Safe Water Initiative

Mozambique Safe Water Initiative

One of The Gathering's primary missional focuses is its partnership with the UMC in Mozambique. Each Christmas the church devotes over half of the offering collected across its multiple Christmas Eve services to the Mozambique Initiative's Safe Water Project. I was tasked with developing a variety of assets to help promote the ministry, inform on progress and ultimately to compel congregants to give generously to the cause (which they did—nearly half a million dollars were donated to the initiative in my time working at the church).

Satellite Video Site Launch

Satellite Video Site Launch

When I started at The Gathering in September of 2011, the preparation for the launch of a second "video venue" site was already underway. The primary pieces of A/V equipment had been installed, but the actual capture/playback workflow had yet to be considered, let alone implemented. I was able to coordinate the remaining technical preparation and launch of the satellite site in January 2012, as well as training and managing a volunteer staff to operate the video capture and playback systems.

Website Redesign & Launch

Website Redesign & Launch

Upon joining The Gathering's staff in a part-time role in September of 2011, I was charged with managing an overhaul of the church's website. I was able to minimize cost by working from a template, while still incorporating the essence of the church—both with updated takes on the church's brand identity, as well as utilizing textures from the church building itself.

The Book of Matches

The Book of Matches

Adapting the lyrical narrative of the song into a theatrical visual concept, I directed this one-take music video shot on 16mm film, winning "Best Music Video" in the 2009 Crossroads Film Festival.
